Our fifteenth season explores the theme of words in music. Shades of Words features works by Hannah Kendall, Jeffrey Mumford, Andile Khumalo, Jessie Cox, and George Lewis. Some of the compositions pull words from poetry; for example, Kendall’s Even sweetness can scratch the throat takes its title from a poem by poet Ocean Vuong, calling to mind the dichotomy between the sweetness of sugar and the human exploitation it took to produce sugar throughout history. In Andile Khumalo’s Shades of Words, the ensemble develops fragments of spoken poetry through musical textures. The pieces on the program employ a variety of imaginative mediums to weave together words and music, from the use of a narrator, to walkie talkies, to breaking the fourth wall between performers and audience.

Hannah Kendall: Even sweetness can scratch the throat (2023)

Talea is collaborating with Alec Hall on a new opera, The Life to Come, which is based on a short story by E.M. Forster. Originally written in 1922, the story was not published until after the author’s death in 1970 due to its explicit interracial homosexuality. In collaboration with librettist and poet Vanessa Place, the opera sets Forster’s story as a tale about English colonial violence in India, queerness, and the birth of love. As we workshop parts of the opera, we hope you will join us for a public showcase to preview what is to come in the 2024/25 season.

By subtracting light from our experience, Solstices adds a new lens to our ability to relate to sound, bringing together performers and audiences through intensive listening. Solstices is an immersive, sensory work expanding the listening experience through worlds of microtones and overtones and evoking the natural phenomena of planetary movement. The performance begins at sunset, 4:26 PM, on the shortest day of the year, to mark the passage from autumn to winter.

    Free RSVP here.

Macabéa is an opera by Suzanne Farrin based on Clarice Lispector’s final novel, The Hour of the Star (1978). It is an electro-sonic operatic experience with film and music that examines the cultural, psychological, and spiritual manifestations of poverty and power. Join us on Thursday, February 8th as we unveil scenes from a Macabéa in a free workshop performance!

A Ukrainian-born Brazilian author, Clarice Lispector’s work disrupts historical tropes regarding poverty by creating a character who is miserably poor yet strangely free. Young Macabéa lives in Rio’s slums, barely existing, loving hot dogs, and spending time with her repulsive boyfriend. Macabéa goes to see a fortune-teller. As she arrives another client is running out crying hysterically. The fortune-teller explains that the woman will be killed by a hit-and-run, but that Macabéa will soon meet a rich, European boyfriend who will give her furs. But the seer’s signals were crossed: as Macabéa steps onto the street a yellow Mercedes barrels down and strikes her. As she dies, the passersby do not see that her blood is a beautiful color red. In this operatic adaptation by novelist Sergio Chejfec, the narrator is a film director who, rather than observe Macabéa’s death from a distance, builds a conspiracy to the climax of the fortune-teller’s misreading. Chejfec’s adaptation propels the novel to the stage by moving Lispector’s plastic narrative voice into a conspiracy to murder.

Talea will premiere the work in Portuguese in the 2025 season at the Theatro São Pedro in São Paulo. Development and the US premiere is supported by the Consulate General of Brazil in New York. Video documentation is sponsored by the NYC Women’s Fund for Media, Music and Theater by the City of New York Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment in association with The New York Foundation for the Arts. The workshop is also supported by the Frayda B. Lindemann Endowed Chair Fund and Elebash Hall at the C.U.N.Y. Graduate Center. Macabéa received development in The American Opera Project’s First Chance program for new works. The commission of Macabéa was made possible with the support of the Ernst von Siemens Foundation, and in part through an award from the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature.

This year’s program highlights individual Talea musicians in works for solo trombone (Mike Lormand), viola (Hannah Levinson), piano (Steven Beck), cello (Christopher Gross) by Andile Khumalo, Bahar Royaee, Georges Aperghis, and Geli Li – all composers whom Talea has featured earlier in the season.

The celebration continues after the concert with a reception, a silent auction (with all proceeds going towards Talea’s 15th season fundraising campaign), and pop-up musical events, including appearances by Suzanne Farrin on Ondes Martenot and Eva Zöllner on accordion. The silent auction goes live on Thursday, May 30th at 6:30 PM ET and is open for online bidding through Sunday, June 2nd at 11:59 PM. View the auction page here.

    Tickets are available here.

Attend both May 30th and June 1st concerts, and save on tickets! You can select “June 1st Combo Ticket Add-On” on the May 30th Talea Encores ticketing page for discounted ($15 GA and $5 students & seniors) tickets for the June 1st Aux Etoiles concert.

Aux Étoiles is the first concert of our newest initiative, Talea Ambassadors: a season-long hybrid residency spotlighting composers and artists from a different country or region each season through performance, podcast interviews, and discussion. This year our focus is on France. Talea commissioned French composer Sanae Ishida as a cornerstone project. Ishida’s new work is inspired by the intimate, dreamlike, and spiritual world of the short story Night of the Milky Way Railway, written by Kenji Miyazawa (1896-1933). Also on the program is the US premiere of Samir Amarouch’s Electronica-1, which utilizes acoustic instruments to mimic the sounds and synchronicities of electronic music and explores what happens when those synchronicities unravel. We pay tribute to the late Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho, who lived and worked in France, performing her textural and dreamlike Cloud Trio. We will also perform the US premiere of Georges Aperghis Carsten Trio, commissioned by our dear friend and board member Katharina Pistor. Please stay tuned for additional Ambassadors events throughout the season, including podcast interviews, panel discussions, and other content highlighting the work and creative processes of our partner composers.

Samir Amarouch, Electronica-1 (2019) *US Premiere
Georges Aperghis: Carsten Trio (2023) *US Premiere
Sanae Ishida: In Pursuit of True Happiness (2024) *World Premiere
    Kaija Saariaho: Cloud Trio (2009)
    Gérard Grisey: Talea (1986)

    Tickets are available here.

Sanae Ishida’s In Pursuit of True Happiness is supported by Jazz & New Music, a program of Villa Albertine and Albertine Foundation.

Interactive online presentation and symposium in collaboration with Ensemble Resonanz, Zentrum für Kunst und Medien (ZKM) Karlsruhe, Ensemble Modern, Ensemble MusikFabrik, and Klangforum Wien

Soloists from each ensemble recorded individual voices from Georg Friedrich Haas’s ensemble work “…Einklang freier Wesen…” in five different cities around the world. The ZKM then developed the recordings into a multichannel audio interface that allows listeners to interact and experiment with the placement of the different voices. The interface visually resembles a constellation of sound sources and allows listeners to take on an active role in exploring and experimenting with the work’s score. The work will be presented in a browser-based app to be released on January 29th, alongside a symposium featuring discussions around experiencing music digitally.

David Adamcyk: Father, My Father (2019) *World Premiere

6:15 pm Pre-Concert Talk: Lucie Vágnerová in conversation with David Adamcyk

Canadian composer David Adamcyk’s new composition, “Father, My Father,” is an evening-length concert music reflection on how the #MeToo movement has impacted him as a father. It features a selection of poems, texts, and musical quotations, amongst which are interspersed interviews with individuals of different ages on the subjects of parenthood, gender, relationships, and power. An array of loudspeakers placed around the Americas Society’s unique concert space play back these materials and immerse the audience in an audio-collage that alternates with original music, performed by five instrumentalists from Talea Ensemble and vocalist/collaborator Lucy Dhegrae. The result is a tightly woven musical experience that considers the changing roles, attitudes, and interpersonal dynamics of gender in society and family contexts, and contemplates how parenthood, among many other avenues, can affect positive change in the future.

Admission is FREE with RSVP here.

Father, My Father is made possible by a grant from the American Composers Forum with funds provided by the Jerome Foundation.

Recognizing that lack of access to music education can be a barrier to diversity in representation in today’s programming, we find ourselves wondering as an ensemble how we can better support future creators of music. This town hall style panel discussion explores the role that contemporary music and creative approaches to music-making can play in education today.

What can we do as performers, educators, administrators, and advocates to empower students to have more agency in creating music? Is it possible to introduce new music in accessible, innovative, and low-cost ways to schools and youth programs that might struggle even to have the resources for general music education? How might an ensemble like Talea develop versatile programs that engage younger audiences from a range of backgrounds?

And what are some resources available to performers, administrators, educators, and listeners when considering gender representation in today’s music?

Works by Michael Pisaro, Eva-Maria Houben, and Antoine Beuger.

Talea performs three pieces from the Wandelweiser circle, a group of composers whose work builds on the experimental traditions of Cage, Wolff, Lucier and Feldman. Inventive, austere, questioning, these works invite the listener to engage with the most basic materials of music—sound and time—in ways that are unexpected and revealing. Often quiet yet powerful, the music of Wandelweiser pushes us to deepen our awareness of the complexity and richness contained within our sonic environments.

When we experience a piece of music fully, our sense of time transforms to an imagined time. Our heart beats and deep breaths, alarm clocks and late trains, recede as we become alert to the cycles and rhythms of a new musical world. The creation of musical flow, a succession of sonic events that can achieve perfect flux or perfect stasis, opens us up to new possibilities for perceiving the world. Join Talea as we explore works that create bold new worlds of musical time through their striking and evocative settings.

What can we do better? A Panel on Diversity & Equity in the Arts

    The Signet
    46 Dunster St, Cambridge, MA

Even as music and performing arts organizations have made efforts towards inclusion, many organizations still struggle to make their programming more diverse and equitable. By bringing together a range of stakeholders – music critics, administrators, artists, and activists – this panel seeks to examine the various cultural and structural realities that have impeded progress and explore ways of creating a blueprint for a more equitable future.

    Panelists:

    · Jeremy Eichler, Classical Music Critic, The Boston Globe

    · Marti Epstein, Professor of Composition, Boston Conservatory and Berklee College of Music

    · Zach Sheets, Development Director, Talea Ensemble

    · Rajna Swaminathan, Improviser-Composer / PhD Candidate in Music (Creative Practice & Critical Inquiry), Harvard University

    · Moderated by Todd McNeel, Media Coordinator, Boston Lyric Opera

Free and open to all who would like to attend. Desserts will be served.

Co-sponsored by Academic Ventures at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study and the Talea Ensemble.
